Norway PM Rebukes Trump's NATO Remarks

(MENAFN) Norway's leader has delivered a sharp rebuke to Donald Trump's assertion that Washington receives no benefits from the Atlantic alliance.

Speaking Monday at the Oslo Security Conference, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store dismissed the U.S. President's recent statements as fundamentally inaccurate.

"It rings completely false when the American President stands in Davos saying that we have given everything to NATO and NATO gives nothing in return. It is wrong. It's plain wrong," Store declared.

The Norwegian premier emphasized that mutual defense arrangements stem from strategic necessity rather than altruism, describing collective security as "not a charity," but rather something "made out of self-interest."

Store pointed to Washington's use of tariff threats against partner nations—part of efforts to acquire Greenland—as evidence of dramatic geopolitical shifts currently underway.

The Prime Minister called for enhanced European coordination across security, defense, and commerce sectors, urging a fundamental reassessment of America's defense role on the continent amid evolving international dynamics.

"We will aim to spend wisely at defense, so it really fits into these regional plans. But then we will do more. We will deepen strategically our cooperation with the lead European partners, with the United Kingdom. Don't forget, friends, EU is critical for our security. But EU member states represent 20% of NATO's military capacity. 80% is non-EU: US, Canada, Turkey, UK, Norway," he added.
