Survival supplies demand surge in Greenland
In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump has renewed his efforts to bring Greenland under American control, arguing that the move is critical for national security to counter Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic—a claim dismissed by officials in both Beijing and Moscow.
Tensions intensified after Trump announced plans to impose an additional 10% tariff in February on European trading partners that resist his Greenland acquisition initiative. He added that tariffs would rise to 25% in June and remain until a “complete and total purchase” is achieved.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described Greenland as essential to US defense in the emerging “battle for the Arctic,” and asserted that European allies would eventually “come around” to the idea of transferring control to Washington.
Local shopkeepers reported that residents are increasingly purchasing camping stoves, freeze-dried meals, and long-shelf-life food items. Meanwhile, Greenlanders interviewed by reporters expressed strong opposition to any US takeover, calling Trump’s proposals irrational and threatening. Many voiced confidence that the plan would fail, citing political and military backing from European partners in defense of the island’s sovereignty.
Last week, multiple European nations, including Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the UK, deployed personnel to Greenland for a Danish-led military exercise, with German forces already having returned home.
In response to Trump’s tariff threats, the EU has pledged to defend its economic interests through countermeasures, including a potential revival of a suspended €93 billion ($108 billion) retaliatory tariff package. Brussels is also considering invoking the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), which allows measures such as restricting market access, investment, and intellectual property rights to combat economic pressure.
