Lavrov Rejects Claims of Russian Plans to Seize Greenland

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Tuesday that Moscow has no intention to "seize" Greenland, dismissing assertions made by US President Donald Trump. Lavrov emphasized that Washington is fully aware neither Russia nor China harbors such ambitions.

During a press briefing reviewing Russia’s diplomatic efforts in 2025, Lavrov declared: "We have no plans to capture Greenland. It’s not our issue. We think Washington knows well about the absence of such plans both in Russia and China."

He also rejected speculation about potential cooperation agreements with Greenland or Iceland, stressing that no conditions exist for such arrangements.

Lavrov underlined that Russia is only monitoring developments concerning Greenland and has no direct role, countering claims that Moscow represents a threat to the territory.

Trump, meanwhile, has pursued the acquisition of resource-rich Greenland, which is an autonomous region under Denmark’s authority, arguing it is essential for US national security and to counter rivals such as China and Russia.

Responding to comparisons made in Western debates, Lavrov remarked that Crimea—annexed by Russia in 2014—is as crucial to Russia’s security as Greenland is to the United States.

“When they justify what’s going on around Greenland by saying that otherwise Russia or China would seize it, there is no proof of that. And in the West, economists and political scientists are already refuting them,” Lavrov said. "We have nothing to do with this issue. We will monitor the situation."

He further linked Greenland’s situation to the "consequences of the colonial era," noting that the territory was historically under Norwegian and later Danish rule for centuries before its status shifted in the mid-20th century.
